Harpo
Harpo
Harpo is a slow and spacious 3/4 contemporary jazz waltz tune, that features warm, rich brass voicings, and subtle contemporary blends of timbre in the orchestrations.
The piece is rarely technically hard, but has moments of rhythmic complexity. It features some 4/3 metric modulation in the melody, which is initially set for Alto 1. There is a lot of quiet playing initially, and the challenge is to swing quietly at a slow tempo, while maintaining a sense of forward motion. Solos are for Alto 1 or guitar, and the shout chorus builds to a blazing brass climax, featuring sparkling brass chords, that build and build. The recap features Baritone doubling guitar, and the piece comes to rest gradually, increasingly serene and calm.
LEVEL: Intermediate, suitable for experienced high school, college, semi-pro or pro bands.
