Chico
‘Chico’ is a salsa tune, with a fun accessible main melody, a twist and a darker side.
The twist is that the entire tune is in 5/4. Like Brubeck’s ‘Take 5’, it an accessible and regular 5 in a bar, held together by the campana (cowbell) in the montuno sections. That darker side gradually shows itself. initially it appears in the form of dissonant voicings, that sit on top of the arrangement, and gradually take it over.
There is a more dynamic through composed middle section, leading to a darker, more electronic solo, featuring electric guitar and synth.
The arrangement then builds back to its initial celebratory mood, and finishes with a show-stopping final shout.
