COACHING AND WORKSHOPS

Coaching

Welcome to my coaching page!

I recently completed the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Executive Coaching Foundation course, and now have a developing practice in coaching.

A colleague of mine powerfully described coaching as ‘a designed alliance between client and coach, that helps bring out the best in the client, and helps the client create and live the life they want to live’.

I'm dedicated to assisting people like you achieve their highest possible level of excellence and effectiveness, be that in your organization or in your personal life.

I came to coaching through being coached myself as a performing arts professional at 2-3 crucial transitions in my career and personal life. I found it transforming, and am more and more aware as a choral director and queer activist how coaching can be helpful in the hectic and unpredictable world of the arts.

I work both one-to-one as a life coach, and as an Executive Coach within organizations. The work is holistic, person-centered, collaborative and can cover a range of personal and professional issues. One-to-one coaching can take place in person or via Zoom.

There is often an opening discovery session, where you begin to set goals with Charlie’s support. Then over a number of carefully planned further sessions, the coaching helps you work through your situation, options and choices. Sometimes there is a little homework, and keeping a reflective log during the process can often be useful.

If you would welcome the opportunity to work some things through with a thought partner in a safe, supportive and confidential space, get in touch.

Workshops

WORKSHOPS FOR CHOIRS AND CHORAL DIRECTORS: Charlie has done regular workshops, clinics and retreats with groups and choirs of all shapes and sizes since the mid-1990s, in the US, the UK and overseas, LGBTIQ+ and mainstream. He also runs weekend retreats and five day festival programs. Here are two examples of recent workshops with Charlotte Gay Men’s Chorus and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir. He specializes in workshops for choral directors, and enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues to develop new skills, share best practice and problem-solve together.

WORKSHOPS FOR JAZZ EDUCATORS: Dating from his time at the Royal College of Music, Charlie has long experience of teaching classically trained instrumentalists, singers and teachers to play jazz for the first time. The focus is on simple practical strategies and activities that demystify improvisation and make it accessible to all. His work is backed up by materials across many instruments, and he has written a number of books on the subject.

WORKSHOPS FOR ARTISTIC AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS: He has been the artistic leader of several arts organizations, large and small, and understands the challenges they face. This work supports artistic and organizational leaders and Boards to refine their focus and work together. In the process, he has found he can help them to re-engage performers and audiences, develop deeper community, increase the social and political impact of their art, and improve commercial success.

Sessions can be on Zoom, at your organization or in person in Brooklyn, New York City. Get started by filling in the form below, or simply email Charlie using the ‘contact’ link above.
